About Moncorvo Judaico

Until 1496, the Jews lived in Torre de Moncorvo separate from the Christians, in the street they called the Jewish Quarter and which in Torre de Moncorvo was located at the back of the Misericórdia Church. And for that space, they paid a rent that the kings of Portugal granted to the Lords of Sampaio. After Portugueses Kings banned the Jewish religion, the Jewish quarters were extinguished, and the synagogues closed. That space took the name of Nova street. On this street, there is still a house from those times, which popular tradition has always identified as the synagogue of the Jews. It currently houses the Maria Assunção Carqueja Rodrigues and Adriano Vasco Rodrigues Jewish Studies Center.
