About TerraMine

The municipality of Pilea - Hortiatis participates as a Partner in the project entitled: "Sustainable Eco-Cultural Valorization of Mines and Quarries Sites in the Cross-Border Area" - "Terra-Mine", which is financed within the European Cooperation Program INTERREG V-A "Greece - Bulgaria 2014-2020".
The corporate structure of the project is coordinated by the Municipality of Madan (Lead Beneficiary) and includes as beneficiary partners the Municipality of Pilea - Hortiatis, the Democritus University of Thrace (Department of Production and Management Engineering), the International Hellenic University (Department of Business Administration - Discipline of Tourism Management) and the University of Mining and Geology "St. Ivan Rilksi".
The overall objective of the Terra-Mine project is to preserve and exploit the old mines and quarries of the cross-border area for tourism purposes, strengthening cooperation between local actors, as well as enhancing their skills.
As part of the project, a mobile application was developed for iOS operating systems, using beacons and QR codes on a plexiglass base, which have been installed in areas near the quarry area, giving users the following possibilities to:
• digitally browse the quarry area of the Municipality of Pilea – Hortiatis,
• choose the destinations they want to visit,
• create routes to recommended tour points
• obtain information about points of interest
combining the most innovative interactive tools such as virtual reality and augmented reality.
The funding body is the INTERREG - V-A Program "GREECE - BULGARIA 2014 - 2020" which is financed by 85% from the European Regional Development Fund and by 15% from national resources.
