About Wildwalks

This app gives you access to topographic maps, tracknotes, photos, terrain profiles and heaps more information for nearly 1000 walks in NSW, check out the full collection of walks on www.wildwalks.com. The walks are found around Sydney, Blue Mountains, Kosciuszko NP and far south coast of NSW

The walks range from 3 mins strolls to multi-day hiking adventures.
Something for everyone from parents taking a stroll with their kids through to remote overnight hikes. Most walks are in National Park, State Forests or Council bushland reserves.

Every walk has a photo gallery, topographic map, terrain profile, tracknotes, details on getting to the trackhead, weather info, user feedback and more.

Download any of the walks and store the maps, photos and tracknotes on your iPhone. Once downloaded the information is still available for when you wander out of phone reception. And yes, there is a little blue dot on the map showing your GPS location, assuming you have a GPS on your device :)

Many walks are 'reversible'. So if the walk goes from Thornleigh to Hornsby, then click on the reverse this walk button and the tracknotes, maps and photo gallery will now take you from Hornsby to Thornleigh.

You can use the handy filter to choose walks based on public transport, length, grade, park or other criteria. Explore your walks in either list or map mode.

Any walk can be reviewed for 30 minutes for free. All wheelchair accessible and short walks can be downloaded and used for free. To download and use all other walks in the collection simply purchase a monthly ($2.99) or annual ($7.99) subscription. The subscriptions auto-renew, if you want to stop this please make sure you switch off the auto-renew at least 24hrs before it is due to renew. Website is great! App is just OK.

First let’s talk about the good stuff: The hikes on this app are extremely well documented with fantastic info about each walk. Bravo to the team who put this together. I found WildWalks first through their website and started printing out their guides before every hike. It’s a huge amount of work putting together detailed guides like this. Truly amazing. Thank you. The app is a good resource if you want a pocket version of the site. Now the bad stuff: I was surprised to see that you can’t see your GPS location on the downloaded maps as you’re going on a hike. This seems like the main promise of a mobile maps app and not very difficult to implement on a technical level. It’s a weird omission. If you’re at a trailhead with multiple trails coming off it it’s sometimes difficult to tell which guide you should download. This is important because the guides are large files and wilderness locations often have poor connectivity. There also isn’t a tab for easy access to tracks that you’ve already downloaded. This means you have to scroll through long lists to find a walk every time. It doesn’t load well if you’re offline either. All up, it’s a great service and I’m happy to have pitched in a few dollars for a truly helpful resource. I just wish the app was a bit better developed so it could be more helpful. I think this could be a very successful service with a bit more work.

Essential for exploring the Sydney region

I hope they continue to add to the app and the trail database. I've found lots of fantastic weekend bush walks with Wildwalks.

A good start

I like the concept, but the app fails to deliver. First, what's up with the pay-per-trail in app purchases? Seems greedy, why would I pay for info I can get for free. Second, lots of trails are missing, lots! Third, the button that locates you via gps is bugged. Would happily pay $3 for working app with full list of trails.
