A full review on 1x as a whole, including the app. I approached 1x with high expectations, drawn in by its promise of showcasing high-quality photography and providing a platform for artists to gain exposure. However, after spending considerable time navigating both the website and app, I’m left questioning why this platform is still relevant in today’s photography landscape. 1. The UI/UX Experience: An Unnecessary Struggle The user interface feels outdated and unintuitive, making it frustrating to find and interact with content. Essential features like navigation, image browsing, and even account settings feel buried behind poorly organized menus. It’s as though they took a decade-old design and added a modern color palette without fixing any of the underlying issues. 2. Gatekeeping at Its Worst 1x markets itself as a “curated gallery” with strict submission standards, but this often feels more like a justification for arbitrary gatekeeping rather than genuine quality control. Many images that make it through are technically proficient but uninspired, leaning heavily on clichés. Meanwhile, unique and bold work is often rejected without detailed feedback, leaving photographers confused and discouraged. 3. Poor Community Building For a platform claiming to be a hub for photographers, the social features are lackluster at best. Interaction among users is minimal, and meaningful connections or networking are nearly impossible to foster. The platform seems more focused on maintaining its “elite” image than creating a vibrant, supportive community. 4. The App: A Buggy Afterthought The mobile app is nothing short of a disaster. Frequent crashes, slow loading times, and limited functionality make it clear that the app was an afterthought. It lacks the polish expected in today’s mobile-first era and feels like it was slapped together as an obligatory nod to modernity. 5. Hidden Costs and Monetization While 1x allows you to upload photos and get “curated,” the experience often feels like a pay-to-play system. Subscription models and charges for additional features (like visibility) seem more about profiting from hopeful photographers than genuinely supporting their art. 6. Lack of Innovation With so many competing platforms offering seamless design, vibrant communities, and real opportunities for photographers to grow, 1x feels like it’s stuck in the past. It’s a dinosaur in a digital age that’s rapidly evolving without it. Conclusion Unless 1x drastically rethinks its approach, updates its technology, and puts real effort into fostering an inclusive and supportive community, it risks fading into irrelevance. Photographers deserve better platforms to showcase their work, and in its current state, 1x doesn’t deserve the attention of serious creatives.
