The India-adapted MEC Wheel (2022-23) provides guidance on starting contraceptive methods. Adapted from the WHO MEC Wheel, it helps family planning providers recommend safe and effective contraceptive methods for women with medical conditions.

It includes seven contraceptive types:

Combined pills (low-dose oral contraceptives, with less than 35 mcg ethinylestradiol) and combined injectable contraceptives.

Centchroman pills.

Progestogen-only pills.

Progestogen-only injectables: DMPA (3-monthly) and NET-EN (2-monthly).

Progestogen-only implants.

Copper IUD (Cu-IUD).

Levonorgestrel IUD (LNG-IUD).

This version applies to the initiation of contraceptive methods.
