A great tool for discovery
I have had this little mini “analyzer” for about 3 years. I use it mostly when trying to initially evaluate a new customer’s network. When you walk into a rats nest of an IT room and you have no idea where to start this is one of several tools that I use. I like being able to carry such a small device around with my cell phone and see if cables are live, and what network they connect to. If it is a Cisco environment I can also tell what port they are on. Yes I could do that with a laptop, however this is so much easier then dragging a laptop around. Also many times there is no room for a laptop. I can just plug this in and let it hang from the Cat 5/6 cable and run a quick test. The TDR wire map and graph are also really great tools and the primary reason I initially purchased the unit. When working with data cables in harsh environments it helps to find where the issue is. It also helps find the bad coupler that someone hid in the ceiling. If you happen to be on a ladder testing a cable for a surveillance camera this is the tool to have. My biggest fear is that I will leave the device somewhere or someone will take it. I think the developer should offer an option to embed an “Apple tag” inside the unit so I would be able to find it again should I loose it. I would certainly recommend this to other folks that work with networks a lot.
