The New FIES was established by Law No. 13,530 of December 7, 2017, for granting funding to students of higher education courses, which are not free, and with a positive evaluation in the processes conducted by the Ministry of Education, funded by the Student Financing Fund. CAIXA operates in the New FIES as a sole agent, responsible for the roles of Operator, Financial Agent and Guarantor Fund Manager.
The New FIES allows zero interest to those who need it most and a financing scale that varies according to the candidate's family income.
