Arbain Nawawi or Al-Arba'in An-Nawawiyah (Arabic: الأربعون النووية) is a book that contains forty-two selected hadiths compiled by Imam Nawawi. Arba'in means forty but actually there are forty-two hadiths contained in this book. This book, along with the book Riyadus Shalihin, is considered the most famous work of Imam Nawawi and is accepted by Muslims around the world. This book is a favorite among students to start memorizing the hadiths of the Prophet before moving on to larger books.
It is customary for the scholars to make collections or summaries of a religious issue. So that in fact Imam Nawawi was not the first nor was he the only one who made the Arbain book. But it is his Arbain book that is widely known and fragrant to this day, leaving other Arbain books compiled by other scholars. Among the arbain books belong to the priests such as Al-Ajurri, Al-Baihaqi, Ash-Shabuni, Al-Hakim, Ad-Daruquthni, Ath-Tabari, As-Suyuthi, Ibn Hajar Al-Asqalani and besides those who number up to dozens of Arbain books. So to distinguish it from other Arbain books, it is called Al-Arba'in An-Nawawiyah (Imam An-Nawawi's Arbain Book).
The basis of this book is the book "Al-Ahadith Al-Kulliyah" which was dictated by Imam Al-Hafizh Abu Amr bin Ash-Shalah, which is a compact and concise collection of 26 hadiths. Then Imam Nawawi fulfilled it into 42 hadiths and named it Al-Arba'in.
Imam Nawawi really chose the hadiths that became the foundation of Islam in compiling his Arba'in book. Among the 42 hadiths, the most important is the first hadith: Intentional hadith, that practice depends on intention; 2nd Hadith: Hadith of Gabriel which contains the Pillars of Islam, the Pillars of Faith and the Pillars of Ihsan; 6th Hadith: About Halal, Haram, and doubtful; and the 9th Hadith: Carry out orders according to ability.
There are several reasons that show the importance of the position of the book al-arba'in An-Nawawiyah:
Covers most of the affairs and needs of Muslims in the world and in the hereafter from aqidah, law, sharia, muamalah and morality. It is a collection of selected hadiths of the prophet, and is jawami'ul kalim which has the priority in short and concise discussion. Hadith -The hadith is a unit that covers the teachings of Islam, either half, or a third or a quarter. It has been widely used by scholars to teach Muslims and has even become the main support in providing an understanding of Islamic teachings so that some scholars are concerned with these hadiths and then give them more detailed explanations.
This book is among the books that are very popular and well received throughout Muslims. Not only in Indonesia or countries where the majority adhere to the Shafi'i school of thought, but throughout the world, both among the santri and among the laity. This book was chosen and widely discussed by scholars and became a reference in spreading Islamic teachings to Muslims related to faith, worship, muamalah and sharia, because of its concise but fundamental nature.
This book is so popular and great that it has attracted the interest of the scholars to give a syarah (companion commentary that describes the contents of the book's matan). Among the scholars who made syarah for this book apart from Imam Nawawi himself include Ibnu Daqiqil Id, Abdurrahman bin Nashir As-Sa'di, and Muhammad bin Salih Al-Utsaimin. Then this attracted Sayyid bin Ibrahim Al-Huwaithi to collect these verses into a book which he named "Ad-Durrarus Salafiyah Syarah Al-Arba'in An-Nawawiyah".
