About Mt Morris Park Walking Tour

The Mt Morris Park Historic District Walking Tour App is a perfect way to learn about and explore one of Harlem New York’s great neighborhoods. The app uses historic photographs from the collection of the Museum of the City of New York, to guide users on a cultural and architectural journey. Sources such as the New York Amsterdam News, a weekly African-American newspaper geared towards Harlem, are cited and provide first hand news accounts of events that occurred in this historic neighborhood. Learn about the early settlers of Harlem and the land and building speculation that followed as New York City expanded northward.

The app highlights the Mount Morris Park Historic District, which includes a remarkably interesting cross-section of turn of the century townhouses and churches. According to the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission, in their 1971 Mount Morris Park Historic District Designation Report, “The churches and individual residences are among the finest in the City. The quality of design and workmanship of these buildings establishes the exceptional character of the District.”

Using photographs from the collection of the Museum of the City of New York, users are able to see the highlighted structures at the time of the photographs, and compare it to present day. Background information is given on each photographed structure on the tour.
