DATA AND CURIOSITIES
The postal addressing system was created in order to organize, streamline and facilitate the posting, location and distribution of mail in a logical way. The system was created by the Brazilian Post and Telegraph Company in May 1971. Until May 1992, Postal Codes throughout Brazil had the format 00000 (five digits).
With the increase in population, the volume of correspondence and the need to create more specific codes for large correspondence recipients, the five-digit system has become insufficient in large cities. With this, in May 1992, the Correios changed the format of postal codes throughout Brazil, which now have eight digits: 00000-000 (five digits - hyphen - three digits).
CEP STRUCTURE
The first five digits have the same function in the system in force in the 1970s and 80s and in the current one: locating the region, the state, the municipality and the region or district. The neighborhood (in most cases) and the street (or, if a large recipient of mail, the condominium, company, etc.) started to be identified by the three-digit suffix added to Brazilian postal codes in 1992.
Brazil was divided into ten postal zones, from 0 to 9, counted from the state of São Paulo, in a counterclockwise direction. The division took place according to population and economic criteria of the time (1972), which implied some distortions that exist today.
The purpose of the CEP is to rationalize the methods of separation of correspondence by simplifying the phases of the sorting, forwarding and distribution processes, allowing mechanized treatment using electronic sorting equipment.
