Ibn Taymiyah rahimahullah said,
سئل سفيان بن عيينة عن غَمٍّ لا يُعْرَفُ سبَبُه قال: هو ذنب همَمْتَ به في سِرِّك ولم تفعله فجيت فالذنوب لها عقوبات السِّرُّ بالسِّرِّ والعلانية بالعلانية
"Sufyan bin‘ Uyainah was asked about anxiety that has no known cause. He answered, "It is because of sin / immorality that you want to commit in solitude and you have not committed. You will be returned / overwritten with anxiety. Thus the penalty of sin (it is worth it), is carried out in solitude so the punishment is also in solitude, so also if openly then the punishment will also appear blatantly. "
Thus sin, will surely end with anxiety for the culprit.
The Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said,
ﻓَﺈِﻥَّ ﺍﻟﺨَﻴْﺮَ ﻃُﻤَﺄْﻧِﻴْﻨَﺔٌ ﻭَﺇِﻥَّ ﺍﻟﺸَّﺮَّ ﺭِﻳْﺒَﺔٌ
"Kindness will bring calm, while ugliness will bring anxiety. "
Sin also makes the soul uneasy
The Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam said,
ﺍﻟْﺒِﺮُّ ﺣُﺴْﻦُ ﺍﻟْﺨُﻠُﻖِ ﻭَﺍﻹِﺛْﻢُ ﻣَﺎ ﺣَﺎﻙَ ﻓِﻰ ﻧَﻔْﺴِﻚَ ﻭَﻛَﺮِﻫْﺖَ ﺃَﻥْ ﻳَﻄَّﻠِﻊَ ﺍﻟﻨَّﺎﺱُ
"Kindness is noble character, while ugliness (sin) is something that disturbs the soul / makes you uneasy and you don't like it when it appears in the midst (of being known) by humans."
Ibn Rajab explained the consequences of sin
ﻣﺎ ﺃﺛَّﺮ ﻓﻲ ﺍﻟﺼﺪﺭ ﺣﺮﺟﺎً ، ﻭﺿﻴﻘﺎً ، ﻭﻗﻠﻘﺎً ﻭﺍﺿﻄﺮﺍﺑﺎً ، ﻓﻠﻢ ﻳﻨﺸﺮﺡ ﻟﻪ ﺍﻟﺼَّﺪﺭ
"What affects the chest / heart is in the form of distress, narrowness, restlessness and shock and does not make the chest become airy / calm."
Expand istigfar in solitude is the solution. Because sin can be lost with istigfar, then tiliness will also disappear
One way to achieve convenience in life and happiness is to take a vacation.
Imam Al-Qurthubi rahimahullah quoted from Ibn Shubaih in his interpretation, that he said,
شَكَا رَجُلٌ إِلَى الْحَسَنِ الْجُدُوبَةَ فَقَالَ لَهُ: اسْتَغْفِرِ اللَّهَ. وَشَكَا آخَرُ إِلَيْهِ الْفَقْرَ فَقَالَ لَهُ: اسْتَغْفِرِ اللَّهَ. وَقَالَ لَهُ آخَرُ. ادْعُ اللَّهَ أَنْ يَرْزُقَنِي وَلَدًا ، فَقَالَ لَهُ: اسْتَغْفِرِ اللَّهَ. وَشَكَا إِلَيْهِ آخَرُ جَفَافَ بُسْتَانِهِ ، فَقَالَ لَهُ: اسْتَغْفِرِ اللَّهَ. فَقُلْنَا لَهُ فِي ذَلِكَ؟ فَقَالَ: مَا قُلْتُ مِنْ عِنْدِي شَيْئًا ، إِنَّ اللَّهَ تَعَالَى يَقُولُ فِي سُورَةِ "نُوحٍ"
"There was a man complaining to him Hasan Al-Basri about the aridity of the earth, so he said to him," Have mercy on Allah! "
others complained to him about poverty, so he said to him, "Have mercy on Allah!"
another said to him, "Pray (me) to God, so that He will give me children!" So he said to him, "Rest with God!"
And the others complained about the dryness of his garden so he also told him, "Have mercy on Allah!"
And we also recommend that to that person
So Hasan Al-Basri replied: "I did not say that of myself. But surely Allah has said in the letter of Noah [verses 10-12]."
