Ebiet first learned guitar from his brother, Ahmad Mukhodam, then studied guitar in Yogyakarta with Kusbini. At first he only sang by performing art shows in Senisono, Patangpuluhan, Wirobrajan, Yogyakarta and also in Central Java, hallalizing the poems by Emily Dickinson, Nobody, and receiving positive responses from viewers. Even so, he still regards his activities as mere hobbies. However, with the encouragement of his close friends from the PSK (Persada Studi Klub founded by Umbu Landu Paranggi) and also a friend of one boarding house, Ebiet finally agreed to advance to the world of Nusantara music. After being repeatedly rejected at various record companies, he was finally accepted at Jackson Record in 1979. [6]
If at first Ebiet was reluctant to leave his lodge not far from the palace hut, then the fact had pointed to a straight path for him to Jakarta. He was recorded by recording successfully. He also did recording in the Philippines to achieve better results, namely the album Camellia III. However, he refused to record his songs in Japanese, when he had the opportunity to appear in public there.
He also recorded on Capitol Records, United States, for his 8th album Zaman. He included Addie M.Sc. and Dodo Zakaria as a partner who helped his music.
The songs become a new trend in the atmosphere of Indonesian pop music. Not surprisingly, Ebiet had ruled the world of Indonesian pop music in the range of 1979-1983. About 7 years Ebiet worked on recordings at Jackson Record. In 1986, the record company which catapulted it was closed and Ebiet was forced to leave. He had set up his own record company EGA Records, which produced 3 albums, Catching the Sun, Sketching the Golden Moon, and Face the Face.
Unfortunately, in 1990, Ebiet, who was "anxious" with Indonesia, finally chose "imprisonment" from the frenzied music industry and chose to stand on the edge. It was not until 1995 that he released the Butterfly Paper album (supported by Ian Antono, Billy J. Budiardjo (late), Purwacaraka, and Erwin Gutawa) and Cinta Sebening Embun (supported by Adi Adrian from KLa Project). In 1996 he released the album Aku Ingin Pulang (supported by Purwacaraka and Embong Rahardjo). The following two years he released the Gamelan album which contained 5 old songs that were rearranged with gamelan music by Dwiki Darmawan and Kiwir. In 2000 Ebiet released the album Cinta Balinet Sinetron and in 2001 he released the album Langit Langit, which was supported by Andi Rianto, Erwin Gutawa and Tohpati. After the album, Ebiet began to retreat for the next 5 years.
Ebiet was one of the singers who supported the Kita Kita album, an album released related to the 2004 tsunami, along with 57 other musicians. He is indeed a singer inspired by nature, social, divinity and humanity so naturally there are some songs that are inspired by natural disasters, so the songs are often the theme of disasters.
In 2007, he released a new album entitled In Love: 25th Anniversary (supported by Anto Hoed), after 5 years of recording absence. The album itself is a memorial for its 25th wedding anniversary, along with 13 other songs that are still in the old arrangement. [7]
The reappearance of Ebiet on September 28, 2008 in the Zone 80 program on Metro TV was quite a cure for his fans. Attended by friends including Eko Tunas, Ebiet G Ade performed an old song that was popular in the 1980s.
