The shadow over Innsmouth is a five-chapter novel, written by H. P. Lovecraft in 1931 and published in April 1936 in its entirety as a novel. It was the only work of Lovecraft published in this way in the life of the author, since the usual thing was that his novels were published by deliveries in magazines.
The story is located in the fictional and decadent town of Innsmouth, in Massachusetts, and tells the discovery of half-human half-hybrid fish that inhabit it. The elder Zadok tells an amazing history of the town, focusing attention on half-human beings half fish, called Deep, who live in the nearby Devil's Reef and visit the town according to a pact: they bring prosperity to the people in the form of abundant fishing and pieces of gold but, in return, they have to receive certain sacrifices and must be allowed to procreate with human inhabitants, resulting in a descendant of progressively deformed hybrid beings capable of living forever.
