Faust (in German, Faust), is a tragedy by the German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe published in two parts, in 1808 and 1832. Conceived to be read rather than to be represented (in the style of La Celestina), it is the work Goethe's most famous and is considered one of the great works of world literature.

The first part, Faust: der Tragödie erster Teil (Faust: First part of the tragedy), was originally completed by Goethe in 1806. His publication in 1808 was followed by a revised edition in 1828–1829, which would be the last edited by the author himself. Previously, a partial version had appeared in 1790 entitled Faust, a fragment. The first versions of the work, known as the Urfaust, were made between 1772 and 1775; however, the details of that elaboration are not entirely clear.

Goethe finished writing the second part, Faust: der Tragödie zweiter Teil (Faust: Second part of the tragedy), in 1832, the year of his death. Unlike the first part, the focus of the action is no longer focused on Fausto's soul, which has been sold to the devil, but rather on social phenomena such as psychology, history and politics. The second part constituted Goethe's main occupation in his later years and appeared only posthumously in 1832.
