Jane Eyre is a novel written by Charlotte Brontë, published in 1847 by Smith, Elder & Company, which at the time of its appearance achieved great popularity, making the author one of the best romantic novelists, and is today considered a classic of English language literature. It can be considered an autobiography, since the author had a secret love with a Belgian teacher named Constantin Heger.
The novel was originally titled Jane Eyre: An Autobiography and was published under the pseudonym Currer Bell. It was immediately successful, both for readers and critics. One of its staunchest advocates was the writer William Makepeace Thackeray, to whom many attributed the work, as the author remained anonymous until a time after its publication. As a thank you, Charlotte dedicated the second edition of her novel to him.
The story is told by Jane Eyre who at ten years of age is guarded by her in-law, Mrs. Reed. Mr. Reed, brother of Jane's mother, takes her in charge when she is orphaned, but dying himself shortly after, and despite having promised his wife that he would raise her as one of his own children, Jane has not not known but humiliations and mistreatment by everyone in the sumptuous mansion, Gateshead Hall.
When Jane begins to question the injustice with which she is treated, and to rebel against her, she is sent to a girls' school, Lowood. She stayed there until she was eighteen when she was outlined as a governess in a wealthy house.
