Tarzan of the Apes is the first in a series of novels written by Edgar Rice Burroughs about the fictional character Tarzan. This story was first published in the pulp magazine All Story Magazine in October 19121 and published as a book for the first time in 1914.
The story begins in 1888, with the mission that the British crown entrusts to John Clayton, Lord Greystoke: visit the African village of Freetown in Sierra Leone and solve the problems with the native inhabitants. Clayton decides to travel with his pregnant wife, Alice Rutherford, so that he can see the birth of his son.
Three months after being abandoned, Alice gives birth to a man, whom they call John. However Alice is left with mental problems after an attack by a gorilla. A year after the baby is born, Alice dies while she sleeps, and Clayton, depressed, tries to move on with her son. But he dies from the attack of Kerchak, leader of the monkeys.
Guided by the crying of the baby, the ape goes to the cradle, but Kala, following his maternal instinct, runs to the cradle, and takes the baby, protecting him from Kerchak, and adopting him as his son under the name of Tarzan, which means "white skin" in the language of the Mangani.
During his childhood and later adolescence, Tarzan learns to make ropes and use them as a rope to catch prey and stop predators. When he reaches 20, Tarzan is already fully aware that he is a man, and dreams of knowing the world of humans. Her desire grows bigger after meeting the young Jane Porter, who is stranded on the beach in the middle of her father's expedition.
