The Phantom of the Opera is a Gothic novel by Gastón Leroux, published in March 1910. The work is inspired by real events and in the novel Trilby by George du Maurier, and combines elements of romance, horror, drama, mystery and tragedy. The story is about a mysterious being who terrorizes the Paris Opera to attract the attention of a young vocalist whom he loves.
The phantom of the opera blackmails the two managers of the opera to pay him 20,000 francs a month and they reserve him a private box for the concerts, since he composes all the operas that are presented there or makes the musical arrangements.
