The War of the Worlds is a science fiction novel written by Herbert George Wells and published for the first time in 1898, which describes a Martian invasion of Earth. It is the first known description of an alien invasion of the Earth, and has had an undoubted influence on subsequent and abundant revisions of this same idea.
The story of the novel is told by an unnamed narrator in 1904, after six years of the Martian invasion. Followed by an introduction given by the protagonist, a writer of speculative science articles in the visit to an observatory in Ottershaw by the invitation of a "remarkable astronomer" named Ogilvy. There they witness an explosion on the surface of the planet Mars, part of a series of events of that type that arouse much interest in the scientific community. Days later, what is believed to be a "meteor" lands in the communal field of Horsell, near London.
The narrator has his home nearby, and he is one of the first to discover that the object is an artificial cylinder launched from Mars. After the attack, the narrator takes his wife to Leatherhead to stay with his relatives until the Martians are dead; Upon returning home, he sees for the first time what the Martians have been building: a huge tripod, a "war machine".
Upon arriving at his house the narrator meets an artilleryman, who tells him that another cylinder has landed between Woking and Leatherhead, separating the narrator from his wife. The two men try to escape together, but when they reach the River Thames they see war machines on the horizon and begin to destroy the town with the heat beam.
