The three musketeers is a novel by the writer Alejandro Dumas, initially published in brochures by the newspaper Le Siècle, between March and July 1844. In that same year it was published as a volume by the Baudry publishing house and reissued in 1846 by JB Fellens and LP Dufour with illustrations by Vivant Beaucé.

The novel tells the adventures of a young 18-year-old Gascon, known as d'Artagnan, who goes to Paris to become a musketeer. The true musketeers are Athos, Porthos and Aramis, inseparable friends who live under the slogan "all for one and one for all." D'Artagnan first faces each of them separately, but they end up being his friends.

Together they serve King Louis XIII and face their prime minister, Cardinal Richelieu, and their agents Milady de Winter and the count of Rochefort, in order to protect the honor of Queen Anne of Austria.
